Italian Media Spotlight: Ambitelnews Covers the TwInn4MicroUp Summer School in Bari

June 29, 2026

On 23 June 2026, the Italian scientific information outlet Ambitelnews published an article covering the first edition of the “Microbial Synthetic Biology Summer School – Tools, Pathways, and Applications for a Sustainable Future and Plastic Upcycling” held from 17 to 19 June 2026 at the Department of Biosciences, Biotechnologies and Environment of the University of Bari Aldo Moro (UNIBA).

The article highlights the international character of the three-day event, which brought together around 60 students, researchers, professionals, and academics from across Europe. Organised within the framework of TwInn4MicroUp, the Summer School aimed to strengthen research and training capacities in microbial synthetic biology and foster knowledge exchange among the project partners and the wider scientific community.

Ambitelnews presents synthetic biology as a rapidly developing field at the interface of biology, engineering, and advanced technologies. Prof. Gennaro Agrimi (UNIBA), scientific coordinator of the Summer School, is quoted describing the School’s aim of providing participants with an overview of the state of the art while introducing emerging research areas such as CRISPR-based genome editing, metabolic engineering, genome mining, artificial cells, artificial intelligence applications in synthetic biology, and plastic bio-upcycling.

The article also highlights the relevance of these technologies to the circular bioeconomy. In particular, it describes TwInn4MicroUp’s ambition to use synthetic biology to develop enzymes and microorganisms capable of converting plastic-derived materials into useful, higher-value products, supporting more sustainable production models.

The programme combined specialist lectures, workshops, and discussion sessions and featured researchers from international institutions in Germany, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Italy. The article concludes by emphasising the importance of investing in scientific research and training to address major societal and environmental challenges and to prepare a new generation of researchers able to combine innovation with sustainability.

This external media coverage contributes to the dissemination of the Summer School beyond the academic community and strengthens the visibility of TwInn4MicroUp and its activities in Italy.
