Microplastics for Breakfast
On April 10th, 2025, the TwInn4MicroUp project was presented at the regional event “Microplastics for Breakfast”, held at the Institute SUPERLAB in Vrčin, Serbia. The event brought together more than 100 researchers and professionals from Serbia, Montenegro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, united by a common goal: to address the growing challenge of micro- and nanoplastic pollution through scientific collaboration and innovation. As part of the event program, Dr. Jasmina Nikodinovic-Runic, project coordinator and researcher at IMGGE, delivered a keynote talk and oral presentation highlighting the TwInn4MicroUp project’s mission to transform plastic waste into valuable bioproducts using tools from synthetic microbial biotechnology. Throughout the event, participants exchanged ideas, shared research findings, and explored opportunities for collaboration. The TwInn4MicroUp team emphasized the project’s role in supporting regional capacity building by sharing its methodologies, ongoing research activities, and future directions. Key discussions revolved around sustainable solutions for micro- and nanoplastics, and the potential for biotechnology to play a central role in creating a circular and bio-based economy. The event also facilitated networking with industry stakeholders and companies interested in sustainable innovation. These interactions laid a strong foundation for future collaborations, bridging the gap between scientific research and practical application in waste valorization.
Participation in “Microplastics for Breakfast” reflects TwInn4MicroUp’s continued commitment to regional engagement, cross-border collaboration, and the development of cutting-edge biotechnological approaches to address plastic pollution.
